I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
~ Cartoon Catchphrase,
Advertising, TV [13019]

Wimpy, the popular hamburger-loving character from the Popeye cartoons, made "I'll gladly pay you on Tuesday," a popular phrase for all Americans and England. Through the years there were some variations in the wording. In one case it was cleverly changed to "for a hamburger today, I'll gladly pay you on the second Tuesday of the week."

Through all the variations, the one thing that didn't change is Wimpy's unquestionable love for hamburgers. So much so that a chain of hamburger houses took the Wimpy name for themselves. Later, when they went out of business in the 1960's, another hamburger chain picked up the character for their advertising. This time, Wimpy was encouraged to change his eating habit.
