This popular proverb is related to "Don't buy a pig in a poke."  (see 16232)

When merchants sold pork by a bagful it was called 'pig in a poke.'  Dishonest grocers would secretly substitute cat for pig. Thus the term, don't let the cat out of the bag, means don't expose the truth.
